By starving the sensibility of our pupils we only make them easier prey to the propagandist when he comes. For famished nature will be avenged and a hard heart is no infallible protection against a soft head.

-CS Lewis- The Abolition of Man

As C. S. Lewis pointed out more than 50 years ago, propaganda is highly effective in soft heads and hard hearts. Right now you might not know what that means exactly but you will be able to find out as you dig in and get your feet wet.

Propaganda [from modern Latin: ‘propagare’, literally “extending forth”] is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people. Instead of impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience. The most effective propaganda is often completely truthful, but some propaganda presents facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the cognitive narrative of the subject in the target audience.

Another example of a propaganda definition:

Propaganda is the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist.

Propaganda Is A Perversion Of Authentic Relationships

Propaganda is first and foremost a change in the relationship dynamic between human beings. Here is an infographic that explains the relationship. Read more about the infographic.

Secondly, there is a inverse relationship between the rise of propaganda and the a disparagement of “truth” or “truth seeking” as a goal.  As philosophical thinkers declared all truth relative, a steady rise in the use of propaganda can be noted.

Propaganda and Education

Half truth and half truth does not equal truthThirdly,  as you begin to look critically at the concepts above it is only natural to begin thinking about how education fits into all this.

Is education designed to lead to a search for truth?

Does education consist simply of “knowledge acquired by learning and instruction” as the Wordbook definition tells us, and if so knowledge about what and for what purpose?  Is this training a dissemination of mere facts or does it begin to start to look more like some definitions of propaganda?

You are going to want to explore the closely related idea of indoctrination for more brain bursting insights.

John Holt, wrote the following in a book entitled, Instead of Education

Education-something that some people do to others for their own good, molding and shaping them and trying to make them learn what they think they ought to know. Today, everywhere in the world, that is what “education” has become and I am wholly against it. People still spend a great deal of time as for years I did myself- taking about how to make “education” more effective and efficient, or how to do it or give it to more people, or how to reform it or humanize it. But to make it more effective and efficient will only be to make it worse, and to help it do even more harm. It cannot be reformed, can not be carried out wisely or humanely, because its purpose is neither wise nor humane.

Next to the right to life itself, the most fundamental of all human rights is the right to control our own mind and thoughts…whoever takes that right away from us , as the educators do , attacks the very center of our being and does us a most profound and lasting injury…

Education with its supporting system of compulsory and competitive schooling, all its carrots and sticks, its grades, diplomas and credentials, now seems to me perhaps the most authoritarian and dangerous of all the social inventions of mankind. It is the deepest foundation of the modern and worldwide slave state, in which most people feel themselves to be nothing but producers, consumers, spectators, and “fans” driven more and more in all aspects of their lives by greed, envy and fear. My concern is not to improve “education” but to do away with it, to end the ugly and antihuman business of people shaping and let people shape themselves.

This is admittedly a jaded view of modern education, go here to start asking more questions.
